John was born on August 5th, 1836 in Swindon, Wiltshire, England and his baptism took place there on September 23rd, 1836 conducted by Reverend Moses Rayner.1 2   John's father was Rev John Maw JOLL and his mother was Catherine Louisa CLIFFE.  His paternal grandparents were Digory JOLL and Martha MAW; his maternal grandparents were John CLIFFE and Elizabeth. He had three brothers named Samuel, Watson and William.  He was the oldest of the four sons. He had two half-brothers and six half-sisters, named George, Alfred, Lucy, Martha, Mary, Elizabeth, Annie and Bertha.  He died at the age of 26 on February 25th, 1863 in Thirsk, Yorkshire, England.  He was buried at Wesleyan Chapel (St James Green,Thirsk), Thirsk, Yorkshire, England.3 4
