Samuel was born on February 4th, 1838 in St Ives, Cambridgeshire, England.1  Samuel's father was Rev John Maw JOLL and his mother was Catherine Louisa CLIFFE.  His paternal grandparents were Digory JOLL and Martha MAW; his maternal grandparents were John CLIFFE and Elizabeth. He had three brothers named John, Watson and William.  He was the second oldest of the four sons. He had two half-brothers and six half-sisters, named George, Alfred, Lucy, Martha, Mary, Elizabeth, Annie and Bertha.  He died at the age of 88 in 1926 in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England.2

‌Samuel and Elizabeth were married in a religious ceremony on March 10th, 1874 in Newark, Nottinghamshire, England.8  They had a daughter named Fanny.
